Decomposed Effects of Democracy on Economic Freedom

Many previous empirical studies conclude that democracy increases economic freedom. However, these studies use highly aggregated indices of economic freedom, which eliminate interesting information and obstruct policy conclusions. The purpose of this study is to empirically study how different categories of economic freedom are affected by democracy in developing countries. There seems to be a positive effect of democracy on

2019 •

HÜSEYİN ÖZDEŞER

Democracy is a vital element for the modernization of societies. Through democracy, countries can realize their economic development. Economic development is necessary to establish the required infrastructure in a country that will enable it to be classified as a developed country. A common value held by all rich and happy countries is democracy. Democracy is the foundation of political stability within a country. Political stability is an indispensable element for producing the policies required for economic stability. It is only possible to achieve stability in the economy when there is political stability created by a democratic environment. In almost all countries that do not have any democratic governing structure political conflicts and economic instability could potentially be seen. In this study, the relationship between democracy and economic development is analyzed as well as why democracy is necessary for economic development. The study also shows the relationship between...

Democracy and economic development.

David Royle

The observation in 1959, that democracy and economic development are related, has resulted in one of the largest spheres of discussion and research in political science theory. The correlation between higher levels of economic development, in terms of per capita GDP, in the existence of a democratic regime is strong. Although this may seem to suggest that economic development favours democratic regimes, facilitating favourable conditions for economic and cultural development. This essay will discuss the alternate theories surrounding this view, and assert that economic development, can occur in either democratic or authoritarian regimes produces a more diversified economy, increases demand for education and facilitates a more complex society. This in turn results in the acceptance of the rule of law, based upon collective decisions liberal ideals, which may facilitate a democratic transition.

Empirical Interconnections among Instrumental Freedoms for Development: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study

2021 •

NOUR EDDINE AGUENANE

In 'development as freedom', Amartya Sen discussed the instrumental role of five types of freedom in improving people's overall capability to lead the kind of lives they value. He argues that when these types of freedom interconnect, they reinforce each other, and their instrumental role in the development process becomes stronger. Therefore, this paper explores possible empirical interconnections between three of the five freedoms identified by Sen: political freedoms, economic facilities, and transparency guarantees. These categories of freedom are considered latent variables. The estimation of the structural equation models and the multi-group analysis using the partial least squares approach confirmed three main results: (i) freedoms of different kinds can strengthen one another through direct positive effects; (ii) they also reinforce each other indirectly, by playing mediating roles; and (iii) these direct and indirect mechanisms of mutual reinforcement operate in the same way both in developed or developing countries.
