The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

May 26, 2010 4 The Plain Dealer Breaking news: cleveland.com Arts Life E5 APPRECIATION 1 Jri NBC Jesse L. Martin, left, as Ed Green and Jerry Orbach as Lennie Briscoe in a 2001 episode of "Law Order." 'Law Order' deserved a bigger bang to close out its groundbreaking run MARK DAWIDZIAK Plain Dealer Television Critic With little fanfare or notice, "Law Order" has slipped into the TV realm known as cancellation. The granddaddy of police procedurals called it quits with a series finale Monday night on NBC. The last case, written and directed by Rene Balcer, put detectives Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Bernard (Anthony Anderson) on the trail of an angry blogger who has threatened to blow up a school. Ski champion Lindsey Vonn was the last guest star.

And that's it. No special twohour finale. No retrospective special. Indeed, it was only confirmed about two weeks ago th that "Law Order" wasn't being renewed, so there hasn't been much chance to prepare for a goodbye. That's the real prime-time crime.

You would think that 20 years on NBC would merit a little more respect and infinitely more attention by NBC. You'd think that tying "Gunsmoke" as the longest-running drama in TV history would earn "Law Order" a little more acclaim. Yes, executive producer Dick Wolf will be getting a fall spinoff series, "Law Order: Los Angeles." And, yes, "Law Order: Special Victims Unit" will be back for a 12th season in September. And, yes, endless repeats of "Law Order" will continue to be seen in the cable universe. But this is the mothership, after all, and attention must be paid.

Compare the silence that surrounds the "Law Order" farewell to all the hype and hoopla focused on Sunday's night's "Lost" finale. And "24" went out with a reasonable amount of regard Monday night on Fox. What's really getting lost is that "Law Order" is being booted off the NBC schedule. It certainly deserved the chance to break the tie with "Gunsmoke," but, even more, "Law Order" deserved some hail-and-farewell recognition for its innovations and influence. This was not the first TV drama to try a storytelling style that examined the investigation and prosecution of a crime.

It was the first to make it work. "Law Order" changed the course of crime dramas from individual sleuths (think "Magnum, P.I." and "Murder, She Wrote" in the '80s) to forensic teams. It shifted the focus from murder mysteries to the law-and-order procedures practiced by police officers and prosecutors. Without "Law Order" you don't get the "CSI" shows, the "NCIS" dramas or "Criminal Minds." "Law Order" allowed for great performances by great actors. On the cop side of the street: George Dzundza, Paul Sorvino, Jerry Orbach, Chris Noth, Dennis Farina, S.

Epatha Merkerson, This 'Ride' is certainly a trip, we think TONY BROWN Plain Dealer Theater Critic It isn't called "Dark Ride" for nothing. New York playwright Len Jenkin and Cleveland's ConvergenceContinuum theater could subtitle it "Murky Ride" or "Confusing Ride" or "Nonsensical Ride." Even had there been a good footnoting by Martin Gardner (the mathematical puzzle-maker and "Alice in Wonderland" annotator who, alas, died Saturday at age 95), viewers would be hard-pressed to say exactly what the play is about, except maybe that it is about the nature of narrative itself. And in the hands of Convergence-Continuum company member Geoffrey Hoffman, who is directing, and a cast of 10 truly unhinged performers that it is 105 minutes of pure theatrical farce of the first order. Which means it is right up the wacky little Tremont-based theater's alley. Here's what appears to be happening, narrative-wise, as best we can tell: The Translator (Curt Arnold, brainy, unperturbed but out of his depth) has been given what he has been told is an ancient document, but he finds that i it contains passages with modern references that couldn't possibly be as old as the document is supposed to be.

And, more startlingly, his research leads him to actual living people who spring from the pages of the document and begin to inhabit his word world. Young Margo (Erin Scerbak, sheathed in Magritte-cloud pajamas) reads postcards from her nomadic boyfriend (Christian Prentice, handsomely mysterious in a grungy way), who winds up on a commercial strip of road i in Indianapolis or someplace very much like it. He enters a diner, confronts a brusque waitress (perky Lauren Smith) and orders Jell-0, which causes everyone in the place to break out in a weird Jell-0 dance. Zendavesta (Michael Regnier, even weirder than Simon), an oculist more interested in the occult who tries to draft him into a wild scheme involving an oculist convention in Mexico. There, South of the Border and down the rabbit hole, with the aid of a twisted army general (Cliff Bailey, not exactly Jack D. Ripper, but close enough), a web of interconnectedness is revealed, showing us that all these people have something in common. The common thing has to do with the document and the jewel. But exactly what is unclear.

And there, many laughs later, is more or less where the play ends. So does this review. To reach Tony Brown: 216-999-4181 Theater news and reviews online: cleveland.com/onstage Jesse L. But it also allowed actors to be replaced. "Law Order" also deserves credit for its outstanding use of guest stars, both TV veterans and up-and-coming players (including Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jennifer Garner). Think about the number of great performances given over the years by guest stars playing judges, lawyers, defendants, victims and relatives of victims. 4 Even if NBC isn't saying anything, well, we noticed.
