  • Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Raps out three hits

    Rotowire

Pages went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Reds.

Pages' playing time predictably took a nosedive when Willson Contreras returned from a forearm injury Monday. Pages went 12-for-50 (.240) in June, and if he continues to hit well in a backup role, he may stay on the major-league roster once Ivan Herrera (back) returns from the injured list. Pages is slashing .191/.260/.324 with two home runs, one stolen base, nine RBI and nine runs scored over 77 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Ryan Helsley: Reaches 30-save milestone

    Rotowire

Helsley struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save over Cincinnati on Sunday.

Helsley efficiently rolled through the Reds' 2-3-4 hitters with just 10 pitches. He extended his MLB save lead and became the first pitcher in the 2024 season to reach 30 saves. He's converted those 30 saves consecutively after blowing his first opportunity of the year March 30. Helsley is sporting a 2.61 ERA with a 46:16 K:BB through 38 innings.

  • Cardinals' Lance Lynn: Cruises to victory

    Rotowire

Lynn (4-3) allowed two hits and a walk over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Reds.

Lynn faced little pushback as he sliced through the Reds' lineup. He generated a season-high 17 whiffs, including 14 with his four-seam fastball. It was his second straight win after going 0-1 in his previous five starts. Lynn dropped his season ERA to 3.59 alongside an 84:31 K:BB through 17 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be in Washington.

  • Cardinals' Matt Carpenter: Hitting bench in series finale

    Rotowire

Carpenter is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Carpenter had gone 3-for-6 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBI while starting in each of the Cardinals' previous three matchups versus righties, but he'll take a seat Sunday even as Cincinnati brings righty Hunter Greene to the mound. Though the Cardinals still seem to view Carpenter as their primary designated hitter against righties, he'll head to the bench any time manager Oliver Marmol wants to give one his other everyday players a day out of the field. Willson Contreras will cede catching duties to Pedro Pages on Sunday while he replaces Carpenter at DH.

  • Cardinals' Kolton Ingram: DFA'd by St. Louis

    Rotowire

The Cardinals designated Ingram for assignment Sunday.

The left-hander was claimed off waivers from the Rangers in early May but never reached the big leagues with the Cardinals before being removed from the 40-man roster. Ingram has a 4.26 ERA in 20 appearances at the Triple-A level with three organizations this season.

  • Cardinals' Jacob Bosiokovic: Contract selected by St. Louis

    Rotowire

The Cardinals selected Bosiokovic's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

The 30-year-old joined St. Louis on a minor-league deal in February and is on the cusp of his major-league debut. Bosiokovic converted to pitching in 2019 after being a position player, and he has a 3.00 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 38:22 K:BB over 30 innings at Memphis this year.

  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Returns to minors

    Rotowire

The Cardinals optioned Graceffo to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

The 24-year-old was called up Friday and made his MLB debut Saturday versus Cincinnati, and he pitched well in long relief with just one run allowed across 4.1 innings. Graceffo won't be available for a few days following that appearance, so Jacob Bosiokovic will come up as a fresh bullpen arm.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Launches homer in loss

    Rotowire

Goldschmidt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Reds.

Goldschmidt went hitless in his previous two games, though he's gone 14-for-59 (.237) with four homers and eight RBI over his last 15 contests. The first baseman is up to 11 long balls on the year as his power has slowly returned in June. He's added 33 RBI, 39 runs scored, four stolen bases and 10 doubles while slashing .228/.297/.365 over 79 games this season.

  • Cardinals' Gordon Graceffo: Makes debut Saturday

    Rotowire

Graceffo allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings of relief in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Reds.

Graceffo was called on for mop-up duty after an unusually poor start from Sonny Gray and an ineffective relief appearance by John King. The Cardinals' bullpen has been leaned on heavily of late, and Graceffo was called up Friday to provide length after working as a starter with Triple-A Memphis. He has a 3.84 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 70:29 K:BB over 75 innings with Memphis this year. It's unclear if the right-hander will stick around in the majors or return to Memphis after this 67-pitch appearance, which was his first in 10 days.

  • Cardinals' Sonny Gray: Labors in loss

    Rotowire

Gray (9-5) took the loss against the Reds on Saturday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Gray allowed two runs in the third inning and then endured a rough fifth frame, loading the bases and yielding a run on an error by Nolan Arenado. He was pulled after the error at 92 pitches, and each of the three inherited runners came around to score before the end of the frame. Gray generated 14 swinging strikes on 92 pitches but failed to complete five innings for just the second time in 15 starts this season. On the year, the 34-year-old owns a stellar 2.98 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 109:23 K:BB over 87.2 innings and tentatively lines up to face the Nationals next week.

  • Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swinging bat, plans to catch

    Rotowire

Herrera (back) said Saturday that he has been swinging a bat over the past several days and plans on catching a bullpen session soon, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Herrera added that he may progress to participating in batting practice within the next several days, and a rehab assignment could come shortly thereafter if his back responds properly. However, it's possible the Cardinals opt to keep him in the minor leagues once he's activated now that Willson Contreras and Pedro Pages are both on the active roster.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Edman: Ankle injury not considered serious

    Rotowire

Manager Oliver Marmol said Saturday that Edman (wrist) was able to field grounders again Friday without any problems with his sprained ankle, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Marmol added that Edman remains on track to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield or Triple-A Memphis sometime next week, barring any setbacks. The 29-year-old infielder has spent all season on the injured list, so an extended stint in the minors will likely be necessary, though it's still possible he'll be able to rejoin the big-league club before the All-Star break.

  • Cardinals' Andre Pallante: Moves to 4-3

    Rotowire

Pallante (4-3) allowed four hits and three walks over 5.1 shutout frames Friday, striking out five and earning a win over Cincinnati.

Pallante worked around a few jams to keep the Reds off the board. The Cardinals would go on to win 1-0, so his scoreless performance was much-needed. Since moving into the starting rotation, Pallante has produced a 3.86 ERA with a 25:13 K:BB in six starts. His season ERA dropped to 4.50 through 38 innings. Pallante's next start is currently lined up to be in Pittsburgh.

  • Cardinals' Ryan Helsley: Extends saves lead

    Rotowire

Helsley struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over the Reds on Friday.

Helsley had about as efficient of an outing as possible, needing only six pitches to close out the 1-0 game. It was his 29th save in 30 tries this season, and he lowered his June ERA to 3.00 through 12 appearances. Helsley leads all of baseball in saves and no one else has more than 25. He dropped his season ERA to 2.68 alongside a 44:16 K:BB.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Getting day off

    Rotowire

Winn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Reds, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Winn will step out of the starting nine for the first time since June 18, giving way to Brandon Crawford at shortstop Friday. Since the start of June, Winn is batting 25-for-97 (.258) with two homers and 16 runs.
