I love a good crockpot dinner – this is a really quick cooking one – perfect for when you are at home, and just want to free yourself up for other things vs cooking. Most crockpot recipes take all day, so I really appreciate this one for when I’m home a bit early!

As with most smothered pork chop recipes, we dredge some pork chops in some seasoned flour, then brown in a skillet. We dump in a slow cooker with some onions. Mix the leftover flour with some stock, and pour it over. With a prep time of fewer than 15 minutes has to be a winner, right?

Smothered Pork Chops (Crockpot Recipe) - Kylee Cooks? ›

Add pork chops to the crockpot. Add the onions. Pour flour/stock mix over the chops. Cook for 2-3 hours on low (internal temperature should be 140 F) Remove pork chops from crockpot and serve with the onions and sauce over the top.

Why are my pork chops tough in the slow cooker? ›

The problem is that pork-loin chops typically found in the supermarket meat case are just too lean to be slow-cooked. They come out dry and mealy, not tender and juicy as you might expect.

Why are my smothered pork chops tough? ›

To keep pork chops tender instead of tough or dry, start with a pan that is really hot, which helps create a good crust on both sides. But after you've done that, reduce the heat to medium. If you keep it too high, the outside can overcook and get tough before the inside is adequately cooked.

Is it better to cook pork chops low or slow? ›

This leaves it dry and tough. As with my dad's pork chops, grilling is a high temperature cooking method. While I recommend cooking low and slow, I emphasize the word slow.

Does cooking pork chops longer make them more tender? ›

Because pork chops are such a lean cut, they are relatively quick-cooking and prone to overcooking. When they're cooked for even a few minutes too long, whether it's in the oven or on the stovetop or grill, they're quick to dry out, and — you guessed it — become tough, chewy, and less than appealing.

Does pork get more tender the longer it cooks in a slow cooker? ›

At around 2 hours, your pork chops will be cooked through (145°F) and have a texture similar to chicken breast — tender, but firm. Between 3 to 6 hours, the chops will have a texture closer to pulled pork; it will be easy to cut with a fork and will pull easily from the bone.

What goes well with smothered pork chops? ›

Smothered pork chops pair perfectly with starchy comfort foods, like mashed potatoes. Other great options include plain rice or risotto. Homemade rolls or cornbread would be great for soaking up all the delicious gravy.

What tenderizes pork chops? ›

Marinate the Pork Chops

Mild tenderizing is accomplished through the use of acidic ingredients. Lemon juice, flavored vinegar, red wine, and coffee are all recommended as marinade ingredients that can soften the meat a little.

What is the best method to cook pork chops? ›

Because one of the best ways to bake pork chops is to start in an oven-safe skillet on the stove and then transfer them into a hot oven. High-heat frying sears them to a golden brown; and a moderately hot oven (400 degrees F) bakes the pork chops gently enough to keep them from drying out.

What liquid should I cook pork in? ›

What liquids should you use for slow-cooked pork? Aside from barbecue sauce, something tangy and sweet is a good go-to for slow-cooked pork. Apple cider vinegar has the right amount of acidity to break down the fattiness and is equipped with a bright flavor that pairs beautifully with pork.

How do you know when pork chops are cooked enough? ›

One way to determine your porks' doneness is by the color of the juices that come out of it when you poke a hole in it with a knife or fork. If the juices run clear or are very faintly pink, the pork is done cooking. If they're mostly or entirely pink or red, it's best to continue cooking.

Is it better to slow cook pork on low or high? ›

The Slow Cooker as a Tool for Braising

You can even leave your house. Set the cooker to low; the high setting will boil the meat instead of braise it, so it's only a quicker trip to an undesirable outcome.

How to make pork extremely tender? ›

To tenderize pork before cooking it, try breaking up the tough muscle by hitting it with a meat mallet evenly across the surface of the meat. Then, if you want your pork to be extra tender, you can marinate it in a tenderizing marinade made with acids, like citrus juices, vinegar, or wine.

What makes pork taste better? ›

You wouldn't necessarily just season pork with cumin, but mixing it with other seasonings like ginger and lime can enhance the flavour significantly. We'd recommend using ground cumin in recipes like our Pork Kebabs Marinated In Orange & Cumin, where the cumin can bring out the citrus and pork flavours well.

How long to cook pork chops on low heat? ›

These pork chops are slow-simmered for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs in a covered skillet on the stovetop... they melt in your mouth.

How do you fix tough pork in a slow cooker? ›

Cook Low and Slow

Add your other ingredients and liquids, then set your cooker to “low.” Plan for 6-9 hours of cooking time for your warming slow cooker meal. This long, slow braise breaks down the connective tissue and fat, creating deliciously soft and juicy meat.

Why is my slow cooked pork chewy? ›

Muscle fibers contract and push out moisture as meat cooks. It first starts to happen when the internal temperature reaches 104℉ (40℃) and greatly increases once you hit 140℉ (60℃). This is why ribeyes, chicken breasts, and pork chops turn dry and chewy when you cook them for too long.

How to soften tough pork chops? ›

Can you overcook slow cooked pork? ›
