Job Description:
This position primarily supports the undergraduate project-basedComputer Science (CS) program. After completing two years of corestudies either at Minnesota State Univesity, Mankato or anotherinstitution, students compete for a position in our upper-divisionCS program. During each of the four semesters in the upper-divisionprogram, students “learn computer science by doing computerscience.” The real-world, full-scale projects that supply the maincurriculum for the program are provided by industry partners andacademic researchers from around the world. The curriculum combinestechnical training with the professional skills developmentnecessary to succeed in a computing career. Responsibilities inthis position include but are not limited to coaching andsupporting students' upper-division CS project work; teaching coreand elective upper-division CS topics courses using active learningpedagogies; teaching lower-division core computing courses;advising undergraduate students; engaging in research/scholarlyactivities, including seeking funding individually orcollaboratively; supporting student growth and educationalexperiences; continuing professional preparation; participating inservice work for the program, department, University, and broadercommunity.Candidates must demonstrate motivation and experience insupport of developing and successfully applying project- andwork-based pedagogy in a higher education context.The successfulcandidate will engage with industry and academic partners to bringin and execute the CS projects that drive the upper-divisionprogram; participate in additional curriculum design, instruction,and evaluation; conduct research productively and mentor studentsin research; help create innovative strategies for studentrecruitment, retention, and program completion; and help developexternal funding from industry and/or government sources.

  • A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up totwenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.

  • The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas asassigned and qualified.

  • May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid,and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or atthe university's additional locations, as assigned.

  • The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues incurriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct researchproductively and mentor students in research, help createinnovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, andcompletion, and develop external funding.

  • All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly orcreative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study,in contributing to student growth and development, and in providingservice to the university and community (See Article 22 andAppendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).

  • This position will advise undergraduate majors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in computer science or closely related fieldconferred on an official transcript at the date ofappointment.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply anequity lens to this position including social justice and/oranti-racism.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working andlearning environment.

  • Experience teaching and fostering learning success amongdiverse student populations including first-generation students,second-language learners, international students, and other studentpopulations that are under-represented in the STEM fields.

  • Demonstrated understanding of, ability to support, and/orexperience with using project-based learning pedagogical methodsacross the breadth of computer science, including teaching,advising, and/or mentoring students in such programs.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to supportdevelopment of industry and academic partner relationships,particularly in garnering and supporting the execution of projectsthat serve as the curricular basis of the upper division CSprogram.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach the following courses, along withadditional courses depending on the department’s needs. Ability toteach upper-division undergraduate topics across the breadth ofcomputer science, but especially courses in the theory ofcomputing, human computer interaction, programming and datastructures, and networking.

  • Demonstrated effective written, oral communication, andpresentation skills, particularly in working with students, staff,and faculty.

  • Experience in industry, military, post-doctoral research,and/or formal and informal educational settings.

  • Demonstrated success or strong potential for productivity inresearch, grant writing, creative activity and scholarship.
