Why These Cheese Treats for Dogs Are the Best

Your dog is going to love these cheese treats with cheddar, parmesan, and lots of healthy ingredients. Real cheese gives them great flavor.

You probably already have all the ingredients needed to make these cheesy treats. Yep, I used pantry staples to make this dog treat recipe.

These homemade dog treats with cheese are made with healthy ingredients – so they are nutritious for your dog. Your pup will think they are eating a treat, but you will know they are eating nourishing food that is as good as a vitamin.

That’s why I enjoy making homemade dog treats so much. I know that my furry friends are eating nutritious food – you never know what’s in the goodies from the store.

Homemade dog biscuits with cheese have no artificial ingredients or added sugar. They are made with real cheese so there’s no artificial cheese flavor like what you’ll find in store-bought ones.

The baked dog treats recipe with nutritional information is just a little further below. First, here’s more about the main ingredient:

Benefits of Cheese for Dogs

Cheese dog treats are nutritious for your furry friend because cheddar cheese is high in protein, which is good for your dog’s muscle development. It’s also high in calcium for strong bones and vitamin A for vision.

These treats will also support your dog’s coat because of the essential fatty acids and give your dog more energy from the B-complex vitamins.

Best Cheese for Dog Treats

Cheddar, Parmesan, and Swiss are the best types of cheese to use for making baked dog treats. Low-fat cheese is best for dogs because too much fat can cause pancreatitis.

Important Note About Dogs Eating Cheese and Dairy Products

Remember, cheese contains lactose. If your dog is lactose intolerant, these cheesy dog bones could give your dog an upset stomach.

Hard, aged cheese has the least amount of lactose in it. Aged cheddar and Parmesan are great choices for dogs and people with lactose intolerance (when eaten in moderation).

Cottage cheese is also lower in sodium than other cheeses.

Ingredients

The exact ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some information about the ingredients I used in these cheese dog treats.

Here’s a list of what you need to make these cheese bones for dogs – just a few simple ingredients! Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic dog treats.

  • Cheddar Cheese – Hand grating is best because pre-grated contains anti-caking agents.
  • Parmesan Cheese – Adds a nutty flavor.
  • Egg – Binds all the ingredients together and is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Coconut Oil – Healthy fat with essential fatty acids (medium chain fatty acids).
  • Oat Flour – You can use store-bought or make your own from rolled oats.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making homemade cheese dog treats, there are a few things to know:

You can use olive oil instead of coconut oil.

I used oat flour instead of whole wheat flour because it’s naturally gluten-free.

Can’t find oat flour at the store? Just put old-fashioned oats in the bowl of a food processor or blender and process until the ground oats have the consistency of flour.

You can use brown rice flour instead of oat flour. You can also make it by blending uncooked brown rice in a blender or food processor.

You can use coconut flour, but you will need to increase the amount of water, or the dough will be too dry. Coconut flour absorbs much more liquid than oat flour.

I do not recommend using almond flour for these treats because it will add more fat and calories.

You can use all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. The amount will have to be adjusted since those flours will cause the dough to have a different consistency. It will take less of those flours than oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these cheese dog biscuits. You can use any cookie shape cutter, but cookie cutters shaped like dog bones or paws give these treats cute shapes.

Use a pyramid pan on a baking sheet if you want the fat from the cheese to drain away as the treats are baking.

You can use a biscuit cutter or a pizza wheel if you don’t have cookie cutters.

Serving Size

How many homemade dog treats should you give your dog at once? That depends on what else you gave your pet to eat that day. This might be a healthier treat, but it is still a treat.

Treats should not make up the bulk of your dog’s calorie intake – they should be something they eat on rare occasions, along with healthy dog food.

Dogs shouldn’t overeat too much fat or carbs – even healthy ones from cheese and oat flour. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat daily.

How to Store

To preserve freshness, store homemade cheddar cheese dog treats in an airtight container.

  • At room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • In the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
  • You can freeze them for up to 4 months for extended storage.

Note the exact shelf life can vary for homemade treats.

Can people eat these cheese dog treats?
